I saw Star Wars: Rogue One and it was fucking awesome! My second favorite Star Wars movie after The Empire Strikes Back! It was very well done and I loved the dark, gritty feel of it. It really showed us the dark, bloody side of the Rebellion. It wasn't cute fuzzy teddy bears dropping rocks out of trees onto the heads of inept Imperial stormtroopers made to look more like Keystone Cops than a galactic war machine.
This was massive firepower and spaceships and shit getting blown up and people dying! The Rebels that went into the Imperial complex at Scarif knew it was a suicide mission and their chances of getting back out were slim to none! But like a real military mission, they knew they HAD to do it. They NEEDED the plans for the Death Star to stop the tyranny and reign of terror the Imperials were going to unleash on the galaxy.
And if they had to die doing it.....well it was for a cause! They couldn't stand by and do nothing!
Darth Vader going all Sith Lord at the end......well that was the icing on the cake and it segued perfectly into what would become the opening scene of Star Wars IV: A New Hope.
Definitely two thumbs up!

I did like it.

I went in without a clue expecting Episode VIII, meaning the one after 'The Force Awakens' with the characters from that movie.  The opening scenes I thought were about Rey's early years before she was dumped on a planet and became a scavenger.  When they showed the character Jyn in a prison, I briefly thought this was Rey somehow captured again until I looked close and saw it was a different actress.  I even groaned seeing the deathstar, thinking, "Is that now 4 fucking deathstars in these movies?"  Nope, it was the first one.

I'm not sure where I finally figured out where 'Rogue One" fit in the timeline, but it was a ways into it.

And I agree with vile that they finally made an actual movie that wasn't about selling cute fuzzy toys, action figures and happy meals to kids.  It was gritty, blunt and heroic.  I've read where those that pick at plot details will find tons of conflicts, but at least this movie explained why the first deathstar was so easy to blow up.  It was designed that way on purpose by its creator, who didn't want to build it in the first place.

I'm calling it Episode 3.5.  It is probably my 4th favorite out of the 8 Star Wars movies made so far.  I still like the first trilogy the best with it difficult to say one that is my favorite, probably 'A New Hope'.  Everyone always says 'The Empire Strikes Back' is the best, but it always seemed like filler to me between the other two movies.  I could have done without the fuzzy ones dropping rocks on stormtrooper heads like vile mentioned, but I did like some of the early scenes in 'Return of the Jedi'.

Really none of the Star Wars movies made after the first trilogy have stunned me the way I hoped.  Each of those 4 (I, II, III and VII) and even 'Rogue One' left me slightly disappointed.  The best scifi movie I've seen in the last 30 years or so was 'Avatar'.  If they can just make a Star Wars movie that made me go "WOW" the way 'Avatar' did, then I would be pleased.

I walked out of Rogue One at the end knowing it was my new favorite of the saga, after 36 years of waiting. I've been back three more times to theaters to re-watch and re-confirm my thoughts, and I still like it best of all, for the same reasons everyone has stated - the grittier, darker morality, plus the pacing, characters, great story of sacrifice, terrific action, it all works.

Plus, when my wife and I were continuing on our Clone Wars watching on Netflix, when they introduced Saw Guerera, I was all like "Hey, that's him! That's the black guy with the limp and the oxygen hose from Rogue One who got blown up on Jedda!"

Being a die hard "trekkie" I need to "officially" say that Star Trek Rules and Star Wars Drools!  Now, unofficially I do like the Star Wars series but I yet to see Rouge One due to financial constraints at the time.  I am waiting for it to come out on DVD (is it yet?)

Also, on JJ Abrams.  I hated what he did to the re-made Star Trek movies, and how he got Han Solo killed off in the last movie I officially call him Jar Jar Abrams.

It is out on DVD now, vhorani. For about a month now. I think you'd like it. And yes I gotta agree that JJ Abrams didn't do the greatest of jobs in directing the last Star Wars movie....it wasn't horrible......but could have been a lot better! And I hate him too for killing off Han Solo!

Let's be fair. Harrison Ford wanted Han to die at the end of Return of the Jedi but didn't get his way. I think he was being fairy insistent this time.
